Glove cuffs differences & uses: A quick guide

Glove School With The Glove Experts - Lesson 2
The glove cuff styles for disposable and reusable gloves

A gardener dealing with dirt & debris all day wants a glove that prevents them from sneaking in.

But a mechanic constantly switching between tasks wants a glove they can easily put on & remove.

Your specific needs will determine the cuff you select.

Keep reading to learn the different styles of reusable and disposable glove cuffs.

Reusable Glove Cuffs

There are 4 common cuff styles when it comes to material/reusable gloves.

1. Knitwrist Glove Cuffs:

Appropriately named, a knitwrist glove cuff is knitted and finished with a beaded cuff.

  • Provides a snug fit
  • Prevents dirt & contaminants from breaching your glove
  • Prevents your glove from sliding down
  • Ensures your wrist feels secure
  • Beaded cuff colour often indicates size

2. Safety Glove Cuffs:

A safety cuff is usually found on leather gloves and is around 5-6cm in length.

  • Open ended cuff doesn’t hug the wrist
  • Allows for quick removal & easy donning
  • Offers good ventilation, enhancing comfort

3. Gauntlet Glove Cuffs:

Founded for knights’ armour, gauntlet cuffs are now typically found on bulky chemical gloves, welding gloves and electrical safety gloves.

  • Open cuff style protects the wrists and forearms
  • Allows good ventilation
  • Quick removal & easy donning
  • Sleeves can easily fit under cuff

4. Secured Glove Cuffs: (Hook & Loop)

A secured cuff fastens at the wrist, typically with hook & loop. High-stress environments commonly use this cuff style for wrist security.

  • Quick don and doff
  • Fastener feature adds extra security to the wrist
  • Hook-and-loop blocks contaminants from breaching the glove
  • Adjustable to users wrist & desired fit

Disposable Glove Cuffs

Disposable gloves are finished with a beaded (or ‘rolled’) cuff to:

  • Reinforce the cuff strength
  • Add durability to prevent tears when donning your gloves
  • Ensure your gloves stay put, without rolling down your hand or wrist throughout the day

Avoid disposable gloves without a beaded cuff.

Disposable glove cuffs mainly differ based on length. The average glove length is 240mm, measured from the fingertip to the bottom of the cuff (+/- 10mm).

A disposable gloves cuff can reach to the shoulder for full PPE protection. The Glove Company offer disposable gloves up to 600mm long for hard-to-reach spots.
